Anthropic just launched its Cyber Mission, and the most important line isn't the partner list.
It's this: they expect AI to tip the balance toward defenders in about two years, but the near term gets harder first. Finding and exploiting vulnerabilities got cheap. Verifying and fixing them is still slow.
That gap is where defenders live right now.
What they announced:
- Critical Infrastructure Defense Program: frontier AI models, on-site engineers, and threat research for the partner security providers protecting power grids, water systems, and transportation
- OSS Scanner: free AI vulnerability scans for open-source projects, with proof of concept and suggested fixes
- An expanded Cyber Verification Program, giving vetted security professionals access to advanced cyber capabilities
My take from the support and escalations side: the bottleneck was never finding problems. It's triage, validation, and remediation at human speed. The defenders who come out ahead won't be the ones replaced by AI. They'll be the ones who learned to put it to work in the boring, unglamorous middle of the pipeline.
The two-year window is a deadline, not a forecast. Learn the tools now.
